Description

The ABBE Level 3 Award in Energy Efficiency for Older and Traditional Buildings has been developed to raise awareness of older, traditional or protected buildings.

Traditional buildings are defined as: "building with solid brick, stone or earth external walls, constructed with moisture‐permeable materials and usually built prior to 1919, or pre‐1919 timber‐frame external walls with any infill".

Protected buildings definition: "building that is listed as of special architectural or historic interest, or located in a designated conservation area".

This qualification meets the requirements set out in PAS2035 and PAS2038. It is mandatory for Retrofit Assessors, Designers and Coordinators working on traditional and protected buildings.

On completing the qualification, learners will be able to:

  • recognise the age, nature and characteristics of older and traditional buildings

  • assess options for the introduction of energy efficiency measures for older and traditional buildings

  • understanding recommendations and giving advice on the introduction of energy efficiency measures

 

Please note that due to funding requirements, any candidates undertaking this course through the Home Decarbonisation Skills Training Competition (HDSTC) funding will have until Friday 17th May 2024 to complete the entire qualification (learning materials and associated assignments). 

 

 

Course Schedule

This course is self-paced and delivered via our state-of-the-art online Learning Management System. The course content has been carefully curated to provide bitesize learning modules with practical assessments. This makes the course extremely convenient as learners have access 24/7.

The Total Qualification Time (TQT) is 27 hours.

The following topics are covered:

  • Understanding British Standard 7913 (BS 7913) in relation to older and traditional buildings

  • The construction and age of older and traditional buildings

  • The maintenance of older and traditional buildings

  • The factors which influence how older and traditional buildings perform and the implications for the introduction of energy efficiency measures

  • Factors influencing the selection of appropriate energy efficiency measures and materials

  • Understanding energy efficiency measures and materials

  • How to make recommendations and give advice on the introduction of energy efficiency measures in older and traditional buildings

There are 2 multiple-choice tests and two case study assignments to be completed as part of the online learning process.

Q: Who is this course suitable for?

A: This course is suitable for anyone who has an existing background in construction and building surveying. It is primarily aimed at Retrofit Assessors, Designers, Coordinators and Installers.

Q: Does this qualification comply with PAS2035 and PAS2038?

A: Yes this qualification has been specifically developed to meet the requirements laid out in PAS2035 & PAS2038 when working on traditional and protected buildings (protected buildings include Listed Buildings and buildings in Conservation Areas or World Heritage Sites).

Q: How is this qualification assessed?

A: At the end of each module there is a self-test quiz followed by a multiple choice assessment. Module 3 will also require learners to complete a Case Study assignment based on a 3D virtual tour of a traditional building.
