Retrofit Assessors play a vital role in the pursuit of energy-efficient homes that prioritise reducing carbon emissions. They assess existing structures and work closely with homeowners and Retrofit Coordinators to develop strategies for elevating energy efficiency.
Going beyond mere financial savings and enhanced living spaces, what distinguishes this profession is the chance to actively contribute to a profoundly meaningful cause—a sustainable future centred around comfort, financial responsibility, and a reduced environmental footprint.
How Does Retrofit Assessment Work?
Scheduling
A retrofit project begins with the collaboration between a Retrofit Assessor and a Retrofit Coordinator. Once a project is underway, the Assessor schedules an assessment with the homeowner to undertake a retrofit assessment.
Assessment
The assessment includes the following:
- Energy Report: The Assessor conducts a detailed inspection of the property’s installed systems and building fabric. It is conducted much the same as an RdSAP Assessment, conducted by Domestic Energy Assessors. This evaluation lays the groundwork for understanding the current state of energy usage within the dwelling.
- Occupancy Report: Engaging with homeowners, the Assessor delves into how the homeowner or occupants use energy in the home. They ask questions about their usage (such as their daily hot water and heating usage) and they gain insights that contribute to a holistic understanding of energy consumption patterns within the household.
- Condition Report: The Assessor will conduct a walkthrough of the entire property to assess and record the condition of the building and each room.
- Ventilation Assessment: The Assessor also conducts an assessment of the current ventilation systems within the property to determine if they are adequate or require improvement.
- Significance Survey: If the property is ‘traditional‘ then the Assessor will also conduct a significance survey. This is an evaluation of the historical, architectural, and cultural significance of the building. The significance survey helps determine which elements should be preserved, protected, or modified during the retrofit process to ensure the building’s historical and cultural value is retained while improving its energy efficiency and functionality.
Working with the Retrofit Coordinator
Once all of this data has been collected, the Retrofit Assessor collates the information and the information is shared with the Retrofit Coordinator. The Retrofit Coordinator will take this forward and create an improvement option evaluation and a medium-term plan designed to enhance the dwelling’s efficiency and, ultimately, benefit the homeowner.
The Impact of Retrofit Assessors
Through their expertise, Retrofit Assessors facilitate recommendations that not only benefit the environment but also significantly improve the quality of life for homeowners. Reduced energy consumption translates to lower utility costs, ensuring a healthier financial future for the people in our communities.
This profession extends beyond physical evaluations; it’s about building connections and sharing knowledge. Retrofit Assessors play a pivotal role in educating clients about the transformative benefits of energy-efficient upgrades. By illustrating how these changes lead to long-term savings for both homeowners and the environment, Assessors become catalysts for positive change.
