NDEA JOB

What Is Domestic Energy Assessment?

A DEA is a qualified energy professional responsible for surveying domestic properties to produce Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs). Whenever a home is sold, rented, or newly built, it legally needs an EPC—and it’s the DEA’s role to inspect the property and gather the necessary details. Then, they use specialised software to produce the EPC. While many DEAs work on a self-employed basis, it’s also possible to be employed by a company or organisation.

Why Become a Domestic Energy Assessor?

As awareness around energy efficiency and sustainable living continues to grow, so does the demand for qualified Domestic Energy Assessors (DEAs). Becoming a DEA opens the door to a rewarding career with flexibility, strong earning potential, and long-term relevance. Whether you’re starting a new career, expanding your property services, or upskilling from another role in the energy or construction sector, DEA training provides a solid foundation. It can also be a gateway into more advanced energy-related roles, such as roles in retrofit or in the non-domestic sector. With property transactions and energy regulations on the rise, now is an ideal time to join this growing profession.

What can a DEA earn?

Earnings as a Domestic Energy Assessor can vary widely, offering flexibility to suit different lifestyles and career goals. Employed DEAs typically earn between £18,000 and £35,000 a year, with some larger companies offering salaries beyond £35,000 for experienced, in-house assessors. If you choose to work as a self-employed DEA, your income will largely depend on how often you complete assessments, the types of properties you survey, and the level of competition in your area. Many self-employed assessors enjoy the freedom to set their own rates and scale their workload.

Where do DEAs find work?

There are several reliable sources of work for Domestic Energy Assessors. The most common clients include estate agents and landlords, as anyone selling or renting out a property is legally required to have a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC).
In addition, local authorities and housing associations regularly require EPCs for their stock of social housing, creating consistent demand for assessments.
Government schemes and energy efficiency policies can also drive additional opportunities, particularly as regulations evolve to support sustainability and Net Zero targets.

Do DEAs Need To Be Accredited?

Before a Domestic Energy Assessor can start issuing official EPCs, they must join a government-approved accreditation scheme. Accreditation is a legal requirement and acts as a quality assurance system within the industry.
These schemes don’t just grant permission to practice—they also provide valuable support. Members benefit from access to specialist software, technical advice, CPD opportunities, and regular updates on industry changes. Schemes also carry out routine audits of assessors’ work to ensure accuracy, compliance, and consistent professional standards.

Do I Need Any Prior Experience?

No, you don’t need any prior experience in the industry, Domestic Energy Assessment is a fantastic entry point into the world of energy. However, it is necessary that you have strong IT skills in order to undertake DEA training as it will involve opening and editing Word documents, creating zip files, organising documents, navigating websites and transferring photos.
