To keep up with the surge in applications for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, the government has allocated additional funding to expand the reach of the scheme.
What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) offers financial support to homeowners and small businesses looking to improve their energy efficiency. By focusing on sustainable heating solutions, the scheme plays a vital role in the UK’s journey toward decarbonising buildings and achieving Net Zero targets.
Through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, eligible applicants can benefit from the following grants:
- £7,500 for an air source heat pump
- £7,500 for a ground source heat pump
- £5,000 for a biomass boiler
Since its launch, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme has been a key driver in upgrading heating systems across the country, helping thousands of households and businesses reduce their carbon footprint and energy costs.
Growing Demand for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme
The popularity of the BUS shows no signs of slowing. In early 2024, applications surged by 75%, and by April, they had increased by an impressive 93% year-on-year. This rapid growth highlights the rising demand for energy-efficient heating systems across the UK.
New Funding to Support Continued Growth
In response to the surge in applications, the government has authorised Ofgem to over-allocate vouchers for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. Following a recent review completed on 30th October 2024, the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero approved up to £30 million in additional funding.
Furthermore, Ofgem now has permission to over-allocate vouchers up to a total of £250 million, ensuring that funding remains available for homeowners and small businesses eager to make the switch to greener heating solutions.
What This Means for Energy Professionals
As the scheme expands, energy professionals (especially those in the retrofit sector) will see increased demand for their services. Heat pumps and biomass boilers are becoming increasingly common, and the scheme’s funding provides homeowners with the incentive to upgrade their systems.
