Having the right tools makes a big difference. We all know that being well-equipped helps you to be successful and effective in whatever you’re doing – Domestic Energy Assessment is no exception. At Energy Trust, we make sure that all our learners know exactly what they need to do and what tools they need to do it. So, what does a DEA need to conduct a safe, effective and accurate assessment? This is Energy Trust’s DEA toolkit essentials for everything you need for a successful career in energy assessment.

Measuring Device

A key part of any energy assessment is measuring the space itself. This data is the backbone of the energy calculations, and as such it must be as reliable as possible. Some DEAs choose to use laser distance range finders. These devices can speed up an assessment exponentially, streamlining the measurement process and leaving you with accurate measurements in a fraction of the time. These can be purchased online from anywhere from £10 – £600! Energy Trust recommends sticking at a reasonably lower price range for these tools, since out on assessments accidents can happen. Losing a £50 laser-measure is much more bearable than losing a £500 one! Alternatively, some DEAs choose to go down the more traditional route by sticking with good old-fashioned measuring tape.

Ladders

Ladders are an essential tool for reaching roof spaces. However, it can be difficult to drag a huge heavy set of ladders around to each site visit. A good, lightweight yet sturdy set of telescopic ladders has a place in any DEA Toolkit.

Personal Protective Equipment

No matter what line of work you’re in, safety is key. For a DEA, their place of work changes with each and every site visit so it’s even more important that they are prepared and safe. In light of this, DEAs should always keep a hard hat, high-visibility vest, gloves, and safe footwear at the ready. This is especially necessary when it comes to loft inspections. You never know what state things will be in up there, so it’s always best to be prepared.

Also, a DEA may consider carrying a face mask with them. During the height of the Covid 19 pandemic, this was a must. As time has passed, face masks have become less and less common. However, a DEA may choose to still wear one to protect both them and their client. If assessors have one on hand at all times, then they will be able to accommodate the client if they would rather face masks be worn inside their home.

Spare Batteries

Our experienced trainers will tell you that this is essential for any DEA. Carrying extra batteries in your car protects you against the embarrassment of running flat halfway through an assessment. There’s nothing less professional than having to ask to borrow some batteries from a client! So, save yourself the risk and bring spares along with you. Also, some DEAs choose to go even further and carry spare tools in the car, just in case. Also, a portable charger for your phone is a good idea for the same reasons.

Torch

Again, in roof spaces, your torch will be your best friend. There’s no guarantee that all parts of the house will have good visibility so a torch could be just what you need to gather all the information possible.

As a DEA becomes more experienced they will no doubt find extra little things that suit their process. But this list serves as a helpful base for DEAs who are just starting out, or for anyone looking to get back to basics.
