The UK is taking yet more steps towards its net zero goals thanks to the recent uptake of heat pumps across the country. There has been a surge of applications under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme with applications up 75% on last year! The program is continuing to install greener heating in thousands of homes.

A Huge Increase Through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme

Figures released for February reveal a staggering 75% increase in applications for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme compared to the same period in 2023. This marks the fourth consecutive month with over 2,000 applications, following the boost in grants for air source and ground source heat pumps to £7,500. With such enhancements, the scheme now stands as one of the most generous in Europe. The average monthly applications from November 2023 to February 2024 surged by 45% after this adjustment was made.

The Changes Responsible For This Uptake

In October of last year, the BUS was expanded to offer grants of up to £7,500 for air-source and ground-source heat pumps. This opened the way for even more people to benefit from the scheme. Not only this, but the requirement for cavity wall and/or loft insulation was revoked. Thus, even more homeowners who didn’t qualify before now have the chance to benefit from the grants. This change could reduce costs associated with semi-detached property installations by £2,500. While insulation remains crucial for efficient heating, this flexibility empowers households to make changes at their own pace.

Demand for heat pumps is soaring, as we make it easier than ever to make the switch to electric heating without big upfront costs… And with applications up 75%, it’s clear our approach is hugely popular with many families

Lord Callanan, Minister for Energy Efficiency and Green Finance

The Impact on the UK

The effect of this huge uptake is substantial. Over 35,741 applications were received and nearly £127 million was dedicated to upgrades by the end of February. This surge in heat pump grants underscores the government’s commitment to supporting households in their transition to cleaner, more sustainable heating solutions. The domestic sector will feel the effects of this the most. Homeowners should see their energy bills go down, finding it easier to tackle colder months whilst enjoying a warm and cosy home. Also, Domestic Energy Assessors will likely see more and more heat pumps popping up as they conduct assessments all over the country.

A Nation Looking Towards Net Zero

As the UK presses forward in its mission towards net-zero emissions, the surge in heat pump installation is a big step in the right direction. With numerous government incentives, the nation is evermore focused on creating a greener future.
