Access to energy performance data is about to open up. Thanks to upcoming Energy Performance of Buildings (England and Wales) Regulations changes, EPC data will soon be more accessible to the right people. This change is set to take effect on 24th June 2024.
How EPC Data Regulations Are Changing
For years, restrictions on data sharing kept valuable energy performance information out of reach. Building owners, landlords, and occupiers often found it difficult to access energy data about their own buildings. But now, the Government has amended the Energy Performance of Buildings (England and Wales) Regulations 2012 to address this issue.
From 24th June 2024, the Government, accreditation schemes, or energy assessors will be able to disclose energy assessment data related to a particular building to relevant parties such as building owners, landlords, and occupiers, as well as third parties with their consent. The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities is also set to amend the Scheme Operating Requirements for producing Energy Certificates to reflect this change.

Thanks to this update, more energy efficiency data will be available online to inform research and strategy regarding energy efficiency improvements. The retrofit industry will benefit massively from accessing a wealth of more information. This expertise will be used to target low-performing buildings and effectively tackle their efficiency issues. After all, these buildings can only be improved once they have been identified.
