Tell Us About Yourself
I’m originally from the Midlands in Coventry and I’m now living in London. I was a science teacher for many years. Then, I transferred into energy where I worked with sustainable buildings, mainly new builds. However, I didn’t do that for very long as I had to leave due to other circumstances. Now, I’m looking to reenter the workforce in a new role. I’ve always been interested in retrofit, particularly traditional buildings, so I am working towards doing something in that field.
What Drew You To The DEA Classroom Course?
Though I looked into online training, an online course just wasn’t conducive to my situation. So, for me, an in-person option was far preferable. I’m glad I came because it was a nice environment and the week progressed at a good pace. I liked that I could clearly see how I was progressing towards the qualification at the end of the week. I was eager to get on and start the next stage of my career plan, so having a set finish date was great.
How Did The Classroom Course Benefit You?
The in-person training was very valuable. When it comes to learning, the human element is really important to me. Having the tutor right there to help made me feel confident about exploring the subject to truly grasp the depth of it all. Also, I liked the fact it was a small class. There was a lovely atmosphere! All of that together helped me to stay motivated and engaged throughout the course.
What Did You Think About The Site Visits?
I found them very valuable. To be honest with you, I was a bit clueless before the course as to how to approach an assessment. Seeing and experiencing everything in real life helped solidify all that we’d learned. It put it into perspective. Also, it gave me the chance to discover some of the challenges I might face when I do jobs in the real world. So, the site visits helped me realise not only what I have to do, but also what I have to overcome.
What Are You Planning On Doing With Your Qualification?
Well, I’m looking forward to doing the retrofit course in November. And then beyond that, I will work in the retrofit field.
What Would You Say To Others Considering Training As A DEA With Energy Trust?
I would highly recommend the classroom DEA course. It’s more expensive, but it’s reassuring to know that you’re going to be qualified at the end of the five days. And it’s a familiar environment; everybody knows what it’s like to be part of a classroom from their time at school. It’s a nice social learning experience. So, yes, I really enjoyed it.
