Description
Domestic Energy Assessor (DEA) Training
-
Duration: 3 Days (Live Online Course via Zoom with a Trainer) + Remote Portfolio Submission
-
Prerequisites: None
-
Certification: ABBE Level 3 Certificate in Domestic Energy Assessment
-
Training Format: Three days of live, interactive online sessions led by an experienced trainer, followed by remote portfolio submission via our Learning Management System.
This course will be delivered via Zoom over three consecutive days with a live tutor and interactive case studies, with the facility to ask questions in real-time - just as if you were sat in the classroom! This course will give you the skills required to survey buildings and produce accurate Energy Performance Certificates for existing domestic dwellings. EPCs are required by law when a property is sold or let. EPCs and Energy Performance Reports are also required for certain Government grant schemes such as ECO4, BUS, GBIS, WH:LG, etc.
You will learn to conduct comprehensive assessments of domestic properties, examining factors that influence energy efficiency, carbon emissions, and sustainability. Our expert trainers will guide you through data collection, analysis, and reporting, providing you with the skills needed to evaluate and improve a home's energy performance.
Upon completing the three-day training, you will be required to develop a remote portfolio of 5 example EPCs, alongside academic assignments, to showcase your ability to apply the knowledge and skills gained during the course.
Retrofit Assessor (RA) Training
-
Duration: Self-Paced (Accessed through our Learning Management System)
-
Prerequisites: Completion of the DEA course with Energy Trust
-
Certification: ABBE Level 3 Certificate for Retrofit Assessors
-
Training Format: On-demand online modules accessible through our Learning Management System
Building on your Domestic Energy Assessor training, this self-paced course prepares you to assess domestic properties for retrofit. Retrofit Assessors undertake a comprehensive survey, incorporating RdSAP data collection, detailed floor plans, ventilation assessment, condition survey, and occupancy assessment. The resulting report is lodged in the Trustmark Data Warehouse, accessible to Retrofit Coordinators and stakeholders to progress retrofit projects.
To access the Retrofit Assessor training, you must have completed the DEA training. You may begin your Retrofit training while completing your DEA portfolio, but your certificate will only be issued once you've passed your DEA qualification.
With our DEA and Retrofit Assessor combined training package, you'll be equipped to assess, advise, and positively impact domestic energy efficiency and sustainability. Join us to help create greener, more energy-efficient homes.
When utilising WHSP funding for this combined course, please note that learners are required to complete both the Domestic Energy Assessor (DEA) and Retrofit Assessor (RA) qualifications within 10 weeks of the course start date. Both qualifications must be fully completed in order for either certification to be awarded.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Who is this course for?
This course is suitable for a wide range of learners, including those with no prior experience. It is particularly well suited to individuals looking to transition into the energy efficiency or retrofit sector, as well as those already working in related industries who want to formalise their knowledge and gain recognised qualifications.
Q: What will I achieve?
On successful completion of this programme, you will gain two nationally recognised qualifications:
• Level 3 Certificate in Domestic Energy Assessment (DEA)
• Level 3 Certificate in Retrofit Assessment (RA)
These qualifications will enable you to produce Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs), which are legally required for the sale and rental of properties, as well as carry out retrofit assessments in line with PAS 2035 standards.
Q: How long will it take?
The DEA online course is three days (approx. 6 hours per day) + remote portfolio assignments. The Retrofit Assessor element is self-paced and is issued upon submission of the DEA portfolio. The average time to complete the combined course is 8-10 weeks. Please note that funded learners have a maximum time limit of 10 weeks to complete the entire course package.
Q: Are there any funding restrictions?
For the Warm Homes Skills Programme (WHSP), it is important to note that both qualifications must be completed within 10 weeks of the course start date. As this is a combined programme, certificates will only be issued once both the DEA and Retrofit Assessor qualifications have been successfully achieved.
Q: Are there any hidden or extra costs?
The price you see advertised includes everything you need to achieve the qualification. This includes the ABBE registration fees, access to the learning management system, RdSAP trainee software, unlimited portfolio attempts within the given timeframe and your final ABBE level 3 certificates.
Q: What happens after I am qualified?
Once you have successfully completed your qualifications, you will need to join an approved accreditation scheme in order to begin working as a Domestic Energy Assessor and/or Retrofit Assessor. Most accreditation bodies are free to join, with costs applied on a per-assessment basis. Each time you produce and lodge an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), there is typically a lodgement fee of around £7.00 + VAT. For Retrofit Assessments, the lodgement fee is usually approximately £5.00 + VAT per submission. Your chosen accreditation scheme will provide access to the systems required to lodge assessments, as well as ongoing support, CPD and industry updates.
Q: Do you offer employment once qualified?
Energy Trust does not offer employment once qualified. However, we work closely with Greenworkx, whose careers team will advise you on the best pathways to take that will lead you to a role.
Q. Do Energy Trust offer student finance?
Yes, we offer finance through a third-party provider. Please click here if you wish to explore financing one of our qualifications. We also offer Klarna and Clearpay during the online checkout.
