The UK has seen scorching temperatures this past week, with some areas seeing 43-degree heat! This is a dangerous reminder that we need to be doing everything we can to fight against climate change. One way in which the UK is doing this is by reducing our carbon emissions in every avenue possible. The social housing sector has received special attention recently, thanks to the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund (SHDF).
The SHDF will take a significant amount of the social housing stock, and upgrade it to meet an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of C. Energy efficiency measures will be installed or upgraded in these homes to achieve this. Furthermore, not only will this improve these homes, but it will also lead to a whole host of other benefits. For instance, it will:
- Develop the retrofit sector
- Tackle fuel poverty
- Reduce carbon emissions
- Improve the comfort, health and well-being of social housing tenants
- Support green jobs
Wave 2.1 of the SDHF has just been updated and focuses on the installation of energy performance measures in social homes in England. The guidance and questions/responses were published in draft form yesterday, on the 20th of July 2022. You can read through that guidance here.
The application form will be available on the .gov website from early August 2022, and the competition window for SHDF Wave 2.1 funding is expected to open in late August/early September 2022. A full indicative timeline of these events is available here.
