We’re delighted to highlight the story of one of our recent Domestic Energy Assessor learners. Dominic Bowkett transformed his career, completely switching industries to unlock his professional potential. This is his story…
What course did you take?
I did the Level 3 Certificate in Domestic Energy Assessment distance learning course with Energy Trust.
Tell us a bit about yourself
I’m originally from Herefordshire but now living in Kent. I’m now a Domestic Energy Assessor and Retrofit Assessor but previously I was in the event marketing industry and was hit by the lockdown, so started looking for a new skill. I am currently studying an MSc in Building Surveying at UCEM and hope to complete this course in 2025.
What drew you to a career in energy?
I originally started my journey on a Building Surveying course; however, I wanted to gain more experience, and EPCs were of interest to me, so I found the Energy Trust and undertook the Domestic Energy Assessor Course.
Did you have any reservations about your training course?
Yes, many. I wondered if I’d be good enough to work in the field after the course and whether it would be a good investment. I also wondered how much work would be available afterwards.
How is your qualification benefitting you in your current role?
I qualified as a DEA, but funding was available at the time for the Retrofit Assessor course, and also the Level 3 Award in Older and Traditional Building, so I did all these with Energy Trust.
The day after I was accredited as a DEA, I was called on the phone by a customer and completed my first EPC that week! I’ve now done over 100 EPCs in the last year. All the courses have helped me gain qualifications to complete EPCs and Retrofit Assessments, and none of this would have been possible without the Energy Trust. I’ve learned so much about different houses and their energy use.
What opportunities have opened up for you thanks to your training?
I’ve been doing all sort of assessments and the work has been regular. I set my hours for four mornings a week and it’s usually full. I am doing Retrofit Assessments for several energy companies, and hope to start soon on a special project for Hard to Decarbonise Homes.
What are your plans for the future?
I hope to complete my MSc in Building Surveying and plan to do Home Buyer Surveys. But, I also want to stay within the energy sector so I imagine I’ll also be doing Retrofit Assessments as I enjoy them.
Is there anything you would you like to tell others about the training you received at Energy Trust?
It’s worth every penny. The training was excellent and the work prospects are very good. I highly recommend Energy Trust and their trainers!
